MENTAL HEALTH FOOTBALL TEAM SHOWCASE NEW KIT DURING MATCH AGAINST SPONSOR

Hoddlesden Tigers FC received sponsorship for kits for the next season from Kingswood Homes, who are building homes in the village of Hoddlesden.

As part of the sponsorship, the Hoddlesden Tigers challenged a team from Kingswood Homes to a match to raise money for Derian House Children’s Hospice and Andy’s Man Club.

Charity football match

The match took place on Sunday 21st July and saw Kingswood Homes come away as the winners and over £500 raised for the two charities.

Hoddlesden Tigers were set up in 2022 by a group of Sunday league players wanting to make a difference to the community.

Chairman Ben Shorrock and director of football Ben Brassington put their strengths and knowledge of non-league football into starting the first Hoddlesden Men’s Mental Health football club.

Ben Shorrock said: “Our team is thriving because it gives men who might have become isolated an outlet and a place to chat through any of their problems with other men their age. We started in January 2022 and we put our first Hoddlesden FC Team into the Burnley district league. Since then the team has grown to include 21 men and we now have our new kits so we can start off the next season strong.”

According to the Mental Health Foundation*, three times as many men as women die by suicide and men aged 40 to 49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK.

Ben continued: “When we set up the team, we wanted it to be a support group for men in the area, a place where we can share our problems and not be judged and I think we have achieved that.”

Stuart Bullough, construction director at Kingswood Homes, said: “It’s great that we’ve been able to help Hoddlesden Tigers with their kit for the new season and it was great to see them wear it for our charity match.

“We had a fantastic time and of course we raised vital funds for two crucial charities.”
