HOUSEBUILDER HELPS ELSWICK BLOOM

A LANCASHIRE village is hoping it has the seeds for success to scoop a top award a second time in a national competition.

It’s five years since Elswick scooped the Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions title.

The village is hoping for a triumphant return, having been nominated to represent the North West in the national competition, with judging taking place on August 8.

Elswick in bloom

Chairman of Elswick Parish Council and village coordinator of Britain in Bloom Paul Hayhurst explained: “It is a great honour for Elswick to have been chosen to represent the North West of England in the national Britain in Bloom final. The last time that the village competed in the national event we won the top Champion of Champions title out of over 700 places that entered the competition, and beat Harrogate, Aberdeen St Peter Port and several others in the final. We’ve had more than 50 volunteers working hard planting and maintaining over 10,000 plants as we try to make Elswick the first place in the UK to win the Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions title a second time. Along with the volunteers who’ve given their time, we’re also extremely grateful to local business, including Kingswood Homes for supporting our efforts with financial support.”

Kingswood Homes is the company behind The Hawthorns, a blossoming new development within the village.

Lesley Myers, sales director for Kingswood Homes, said: “Taking part in Britain in Bloom is a fantastic way of bringing the community together, providing functional fitness and social activities for volunteers. It’s great to see the people of Elswick really embracing the spirit of the competition and ensuring the neighbourhood looks its very best. Elswick has grown because of our new homes and so we wanted to give back to the community by sponsoring Elswick in Bloom. The team have made a sterling effort, particularly in maintaining the plants and flowers during the recent heatwave. We hope the Britain in Bloom are impressed with their efforts and creativity as we are.”

If you’re ready to uproot yourself and plant roots in a new home in Elswick, you’ll need to be quick as the final few homes at The Hawthorns are now on sale. Prices start from £314,995, for a three-bedroom, three-bathroom Haybarn 3, with landscaped garden included.
